About me
The Journey
I started playing rugby at the age of 4! 13 years later, my professional rugby career began after making my first team debut at just 17 years old following years of serious dedication.
Looking back, I had no real sense of who I was or how I had arrived at that level – it all felt like it happened so quick. I had pushed my body to its limits and prided myself on training when others weren’t. Anxiety, discomfort, and isolation felt normal to me – almost like I had accepted that it was the cost of chasing success. I realise looking back was using my external achievements to mask how I felt internally. It made sense that I was never truly happy or content with what I was achieving, as no amount of success could change how I felt inside. But I didn’t for one minute think something was wrong, as it was all I had known. So I would move the goalposts and strive for more.
After seven years performing at the highest level, that relentless pace and ignoring my internal world of supressed emotions and self-abandonment finally caught up with me. I burnt out – coincidentally, at the very peak of my career.
It was in 2018 where I had just won my second Grand Final at Old Trafford with Wigan Warriors, represented England for a second time against New Zealand, and moved to Australia to play in the world’s best competition. But I could no longer hide what was happening inside, nor could I achieve much more to mask it. I had reached an uncomfortable dead end. A medical diagnosis of anxiety and depression followed and a reluctant decision to try to make some changes in my life.
The Turning Point
In the months that followed, my attempts to unpack my life felt tentative. Then, one day, everything changed for me. I lost my younger brother unexpectedly overnight at just 23 years old, after losing his own personal battle with his mental health. Amongst such pain and heartbreak, I experienced a rapid realisation of everything I had avoided for so long. The loss of my brother gave me the courage to face what I was experiencing head-on. I accepted that I wasn’t okay, I asked for support, and I began a process of rediscovery.
From 2018 onwards, I’ve been committed to exploring and understanding every aspect of my life. It’s been the hardest but most rewarding thing I have ever done. This process has taught me endless amounts about myself, others and the world around me. As I continued to uncover more, I felt a strong pull to share what I had learned with as many people as possible. I knew I had an opportunity to play my part in changing the trajectory of the a growing mental health problem.
At just 29, despite having returned to the 24-man England training squad after a seven-year absence, my mind was made up – I decided to hang up my boots. There was a fire inside me that ignited the day I lost my little brother, and I could no longer ignore it. Initially, post retirement, I only spoke about mental health. But as I continued to reflect on my experiences in elite sport and life, I realised there were so many parallels – ways to improve wellbeing while also maximising performance. The two weren’t mutually exclusive.
The Mission
My sporting success came with a lot of suffering. Not because I was broken, I just didn’t understand myself at all. Through the process of unravelling and facing my issues, I am now able to help others avoid that same trajectory. Allowing individuals and teams to succeed and enjoy the journey of high performance. Most recently, human connection has become the centre of my work. With its deep ties to resilience, teamwork, sustainable performance, and wellbeing and so much more.. I’ve realised that connection is everything. As it deepens, our experience of life becomes more meaningful. How we connect to ourselves, others, and the world around us has become the foundation of everything I deliver.
No matter who we are or where we find ourselves in life, how we feel internally shapes how we learn, lead, and live. I’ve built my work on the belief that wellbeing and self-understanding aren’t optional – they are the foundations for growth, meaningful connection, and sustainable success.
